How to Bank and Shop Safely Online
Whilst banking and shopping online can be fast and convenient, it is important to protect yourself from cyber threats, such as fraud and identity theft.
At UBL UK, we take online security seriously. We use the following security measures to keep our customers safe online:
1) One Time Passcodes (OTP)
A One Time Passcode is a temporary code used to add an additional layer of security when using Online Banking or shopping online to ensure that only authorised users are able to complete online purchases and to gain access to online accounts. When a customer logs into their UBL UK account online via the digital banking website or makes online purchases, they are sent a one-time passcode to validate the authenticity of the login attempt or transaction.
2) Enabling Fingerprint or Facial Recognition
When using the UBL UK Mobile Banking App, customers can enable and use fingerprint or facial recognition to add biometric security when using mobile banking. This added layer of security ensures that only the account holder can access their banking information, as fingerprints and facial recognition are unique to each individual.
3) E-alerts
When customers carry out transactions, (e.g. online transactions, debit card transactions or cash withdrawals), we will send an SMS text message or email to their registered phone number and email, alerting them of the activity on their account. This ensures that customers are updated on the activity on their account in real time, enabling them to identify unauthorised transactions promptly.
Here are some essential tips to consider to protect yourself when banking and shopping online:
Use Secure Connections
• Wherever possible, use secure networks, such as home Wi-Fi or mobile data to complete online transactions. Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks, as these are usually unsecure and easy for hackers to obtain personal information.
• If you are using Wi-Fi in a restaurant or coffee shop, verify the Wi-Fi network name with a staff member prior to connecting. This will reduce the risk of accessing an unsecure or dangerous network.
• Remember to turn off Airdrop (for Apple devices) and Quick Share (for Android devices) to prevent unauthorised access to files and important information.
Virtual Private Network (VPN)
• A VPN creates a secure pathway that lets you access online services and websites privately and securely. The technology encrypts your data and the information is scrambled, preventing potential scammers from tracking your online activity. If you must use public Wi-Fi networks, use a VPN to encrypt your internet connection, to make it harder for hackers to steal your data.
Maintain Device Safety
• To keep your phone, tablet, and laptop secure while banking and shopping online, make sure that the latest software updates are installed on your devices. This ensures that you are benefiting from the most up to date security enhancements to protect your personal information.
Use Robust and Unique Passwords
• Update your password on a regular basis and avoid repeating passwords across different online accounts.
• Create complex and unique passwords, which contains a combination of numbers, letters and special characters.
